I would have been a fool to stray far from the apartment tower. Hailey is in a defiant mood—worse than the ones I witnessed while Archie was still alive and kicking. She can throw me out of the apartment, but she can’t send me across town.

My driver pulls my black SUV into a side alley two blocks away, and I wait. The three cameras I placed in the apartment tell the tale. She’s fuming, and she’s making her own plans.

Hailey is going out against my wishes, and she’s taking that hunk of beef bodyguard with her. I watch her climb out of his Lexus and enter a club that I know is far beneath her. The other jerks and their skanks entering will never match my doll. I need to teach her the error of her ways.

I wait for about twenty minutes. My doll needs to get a good taste of what her sweet freedom is like. It’s nothing compared with the penthouse style and the designer gowns, precious jewels, and gourmet food that I’ll give her for the rest of her days.

When I finally enter the dive, I spot Bronco first—he’s at the bar. I don’t want him to see me, so I skirt around to the opposite side of the club. It’s not easy to blend in dressed in a sleek Italian suit, but I do my best, smiling and mingling.

There she is. My doll attracted two shady characters. One’s shirtless, and the other wears chains on his hips. When they’ve moved in too close for my comfort, I part the crowd and slide in behind her. Seconds later, she backs into me, and she’s mine.

I slam the door of the apartment so hard that it rattles the building. Hailey is still defiant. She has a spine of steel. She’s waiting for me in the living room while the cowardly bodyguard shrinks behind her.

As I make my way down the short hallway, I hear the muted sound of a TV coming from Haines’ room. He was the smart one and stayed home.

Bronco decides to grow a set of balls and confront me halfway between the front door and the living room. I bellow, “You’re fired!”

I hear a protest from Hailey. “You can’t. It’s my fault. He only did what I told him to do.”

“I don’t care. You’re fired. Get out of here.”

“No—please, Seth. You shouldn’t fire Bronco.”

“I hired him, and I can fire him.” I turn on Bronco and practically push him out the door. When he’s gone, I make sure the door’s locked tight.

There she is on the sofa in a glittery little dress. I growl at her. “Now, you.”

The eyelashes flutter as she pulls her legs up to her chest. I sit on the ottoman and point at my knees.

Hailey rubs her eyes and sniffles. “I only wanted to feel a little bit of freedom. I’ve spent four years locked up. I need to spread my wings. Every girl needs that.”

I’m not having it. “You defied me.
